Martinsville—located on the state’s southern border in Henry County—may be known primarily as the home of the Martinsville Speedway and NASCAR racing events, but the area also offers lots of outdoor fun off the track for four-legged visitors.
Part of the Smith River Trail System, the Paw Path was designed specifically for canines, with fun features like a balance beam and a fire hydrant. The path is located at the Smith River Sports Complex and runs alongside the Smith River, and if you need to cool off after your hike, you can take a dip in the river or head to either Philpott Lake or the Beaver Creek Reservoir.
For some après-workout recreation, head to nearby Mountain Valley Brewing, a hop farm turned craft brewery. Open Thursday through Sunday, you can catch some live music at the outdoor pavilion or play games on the expansive lawn while enjoying the bucolic views. If a cold glass of Viognier, Pinot Gris or Rosé is more your speed, head to Hamlet Vineyards on Sunday afternoons to chill out on the tasting terrace, where your leashed furry family is welcome.
For a bite to eat or a bit of shopping, head into Martinsville and be sure to stop by Fido’s Finds, a collectibles store run by and benefiting the local SPCA. Or pop into the Martinsville-Henry County Visitor Center to get your pooch a Virginia is For Lovers pet bandanna. Restaurants including the Daily Grind, Sweet Cakes and Wild Magnolia feature pet friendly patios, and several local hotels welcome pets if you just can’t bear to leave.
