If you and your pal are craving sand and surf, head to Virginia Beach for some fun in the sun. During the summer season, pets can play on the north end of the beach above 42nd Street or on the south end of the beach in Sandbridge before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m., but are only allowed on the boardwalk from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and must be leashed. If you visit off-season—before Memorial Day or after Labor Day—your four-legged friend is allowed on all areas of the beach and boardwalk at any time.
Nearby, First Landing State Park offers miles of trails for you and your pup to explore, as well as a beach along the Chesapeake Bay. This is actually where the English colonists first landed in 1607 before heading on to Jamestown to establish their settlement. Pack a picnic and spend the day or reserve a cabin—a small additional per night pet fee is required—and enjoy the best of both worlds. If you prefer a hotel near the main beach area and boardwalk, there are several options to choose from and a variety of private vacation rentals are also available. Visit the Virginia Beach tourism website for recommendations.
If you’re ready for a cold one at the end of the day, Commonwealth Brewing welcomes well-behaved dogs and has plenty of outdoor seating. On Monday nights, enjoy “Dinner with Your Dog” at Croc’s 19th Street Bistro, featuring Yappy Hour cocktails like the Salty Dog!
