For those of us who are dog lovers, every day is National Dog Day, but August 26th is the official day on our calendars to honor all canines. I can’t think of a better way to do that than to share this video from King Family Vineyards near Charlottesville. After all, two of my favorite things are wine and puppies! You’re going to want to bookmark this one and watch it again and again whenever you need a lift.
This award-winning family winery in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is one of the best in the Monticello AVA and in the state. Winemaker Matthieu Finot combines his European heritage and Old World sensibilities with Virginia’s terroir to bring out the best in the estate-grown French varietals. If you’re a white wine aficionado, try the Viognier—a wine that Virginia excels at—and if you prefer reds, you can’t go wrong with a Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot. Or, if like me you’re a Bordeaux fan, try the Meritage and the award-winning Mountain Plains blend.
The gorgeous, 327-acre winery features a covered veranda, expansive lawn and a brick patio with stunning mountain views, and well-behaved, leashed four-legged guests are welcome in all of the outdoor areas. One of the unique features at King Family Vineyards is the polo field, where you can catch matches on certain weekends.
Currently, in accordance with Virginia’s reopening regulations, masks are required and appropriate social distancing is enforced, including limiting the number of guests allowed in the restrooms at one time, which now have one-way entrances and exits for safety. And if you’re still not ready to do an in-person visit, at least stop by and pick up a bottle of wine curbside while you’re in the area and prepare a toast to your own pooch!
